For years, people have been pushing for the types of changes to our tax system proposed by the HI Tax Fairness initiative, and it hasn’t happened. This year is different. Here’s why:
- There’s never been a revenue neutral package. Every year it comes down to the same thing–reducing the heavy tax burden for families struggling to make ends meet opens up a gap in the state budget. The HI Tax Fairness package fills that gap by adopting modest tax increases for Hawaii highest-earners who have the lowest tax burden by share of income–a proposal supported by high-earners who understand the importance of tax fairness and the benefits to their community.
- People are struggling like never before. Nearly half of Hawaii’s families are living paycheck to paycheck. Housing cost increases have been dramatically outpacing wage growth, and our homelessness rates keep going up. Our policy makers are seeing that something needs to change.
- With changes in D.C., Hawaii is bracing for the worst. We can’t count on the folks in D.C. to improve things for struggling families, in fact, there’s a good chance things are going to get worse. The HI Tax Fairness plan is one of the most effective ways of putting money–or more accurately, keeping money in people’s pockets so they can pay the rent and keep food on the table.
- We have never seen the overwhelming support for tax fairness we are seeing now! An unprecedented number of people submitted testimony for the initial round of hearings for tax fairness bills, and the number of supporters keeps growing.
To push this effort over the top, we need to raise a modest amount of funding–$10,000–to cover three months of communications support necessary to spread the word far and wide and recruit an even deeper base of support.
Please donate $5 or $10, or more to support this effort. Thank you for your support!
Donations for the HI Tax Fairness initiative will go to Hawaii Appleseed, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, and member of the coalition supporting the initiative. All funds donated through this website will be used to support HI Tax Fairness.
